How to Pack for Excel College
August 20, 2024
Being that students live in homes and can have a varying number of roommates, there’s always a lot of questions on how to pack, what to bring, the space available, etc. And understandably so - going to college and moving are exciting times, and you want to be prepared!
How much space is available in each room?
This is one of our most asked questions! Each student is given 18-inches of hanging space in a closet or armoire, along with under-the-bed space and some form of drawer space. All of the storage space outside of that 18-inches in the closet equates to four, 1.5 bushel laundry baskets’ worth of belongings. This includes folded clothing, toiletries, books and notebooks, outdoor gear, and other miscellaneous personal items. What is a 1.5 bushel laundry basket? It’s your standard, around-the-house laundry basket (picture included below)!
How do we utilize the 1.5 bushel laundry basket?
Count on the 1.5 bushel laundry basket being your actual laundry basket! Our recommendation is to use it as a measuring unit for all of the belongings you’re bringing with you to Excel.
Begin with clothing (the fun part!). All your folded clothing must fit within the laundry basket (we recommend leaving room for all your fun thrift finds while you’re here!). Clothing can be Round 1 of packing.
Round 2 can be your toiletries and/or your books, notebooks, laptop, etc. for school and personal use.
Round 3 can be your sleeping bag, sleeping pad, hammock, and any other outdoor gear you prefer to have with you here in Western North Carolina (we do love the outdoors around here)!
Round 4 can be used for any other miscellaneous items you’d like to have with you during your time in college. By the time you’ve filled up your 4th round of the laundry basket, that’s it! You’ve filled up your future room space, and checked off everything you’ll need for your time at Excel. (See our recent Instagram post to help get an idea of what this looks like):

What should we bring?
